Visual Design Guidance Document Updates
Visual Design Guidance Document Version 2.0 – Updated September 27, 2017
The authors want to thank the researchers from NOAA’s Climate Program Office whose comments and suggestions have contributed to the improvements made to the Guidance Document in this update.
Minor wording changes to improve the flow and understandability of the text (e.g. by removing or better explaining jargon) were made throughout the main report.
New additions to the report happened in the following sections:
Section 3.2.3 Clutter
Added sample graphics illustrating a graphic depicting a complex data set as presented by Harold et al. (2016):
- Image 9a, example presented by the authors and taken from the 2013 IPCC report)
- Image 9b, same IPCC graphic with authors’ annotations
- Image 9c, cleaner graphic of the same data set redesigned by the authors
Section 4.4 Metadata
Added additional context and concrete recommendations based on the research conducted under the ADVANCE grant.
Section 5.3 Indicator testing and evaluation
Added additional context and concrete recommendations based on our team’s NOAA sponsored indicator understandability research (further details included under Appendix V).
Added Appendix V “Climate Indicator and Graphics Understandability Synthesis and Research: Recommendations for Graphics in the 4th National Climate Assessment and U.S. Global Change Research Program Indicators”
